OUR STORY

Upshecle was started from a rambling chat between girlfriends at a warm community back in 2021. We were talking about a troubling news about how plastic waste would permanently damage the environment and leave nothing for our future generation. Some of us were new mothers, so imagine the horror we thought of at the moment.

Plastic waste has become such a huge problem in Indonesia. Indonesia is ranked fifth as a country that contributes most plastic waste to the ocean. According to World Population Review, plastic waste in the seas of Indonesia has reached 56 thousand tons in 2021. Apart from plastic waste, Indonesia also struggles with paper and fashion waste.

As we grew concern about the plastic waste issue that haunts our generation, our intention was actually simple. We want to act and find solution, not adding another problem to our earth. We collect plastic bottle waste pieces by pieces and found a partner to create our first initiatives, a simple line of upcycled bags and accessories made of 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate or known as PET.

So, what the future has in store for us?

We’d love to specifically be a sustainable fashion and lifestyle initiative that is driven by ambition to make a more sustainable living upon this earth. We’re on our way to develop other eco-friendly fabrics as the basic materials to all sustainable goods we want to create.

To make a whole circular economy works around our business, we design, source, and craft our upcycled goods by empowering marginalized women within our workshop area. We also collaborate with local artisans and small crafters from all over Indonesia, in order to make a unique design and timeless style that is impactful to community.

IMPACT TO ENVIRONMENT

Since the start of our journey in 2021, we have creatively repurposed 1.1 millions of plastic bottle waste. Equals with 26.3 tones of plastic bottle waste altogether.

IMPACT TO COMMUNITY

We have been building a humble yet strong community.

Today, our foremost community and beneficiary is vocational students concentrate in fashion study that are closer to our operational area. We create workshop where we develop our products and projects together, so we can empower their practical skill.

In the long run, we aim to benefit more and more marginalized woman throughout Indonesia. Whether the villager women, women who involve in family welfare development, women artisans and crafters, and many others.
